A young child is in critical condition following a shooting that occurred in the vicinity of South Harding and West Morris streets on Tuesday afternoon, according to police officials.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department expressed their deep concern and sorrow regarding the heartbreaking incidents of children being shot in the city.
Officer Drew Brown from IMPD public affairs expressed deep sorrow and described the recent incidents in Indianapolis as an absolute tragedy. He emphasized that within the last 24 hours, two children were shot, which is devastating. Officer Brown stated, “No family should have to experience something as terrible as this.”
Medics and IMPD officers responded to a report of a person being shot at the intersection southwest of downtown on Tuesday at around 5:05 p.m. The incident occurred near the Wendy’s restaurant, where the police were gathered to investigate the shooting of the boy.
According to the police, they believe that the gunshot may have been self-inflicted. In light of this incident, they are urging people to take measures to secure their guns. It is worth noting that the Marion County Sheriff’s Office provides free cable-style gun locks, which can be obtained from any branch of the Indianapolis Public Library.
“The investigation is currently underway to determine the precise events that led to this incident. It is crucial to emphasize the undeniable connection between gun ownership and gun responsibility,” Brown stated.
The authorities suspected that the shooting took place inside a vehicle.
According to an anonymous Wendy’s employee, there was a significant influx of first responders following a distressing incident involving a baby being shot. The employee expressed their shock and devastation upon learning about the incident, particularly because it occurred right before their eyes.
