Those majoring in social work will have a little extra motivation to complete their degree as students prepare to return to college campuses this autumn.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services provides funding for the fellowship program, which is administered by five public colleges.

College students majoring in social work are given $5,000 per semester.

The director of Western Michigan University’s child welfare program is Anna Yelick [YELL-ick]. The shortage, according to her, has been detrimental to people working in the field.

“Their attempts to help one another essentially created this system of scarcity. It affects the workforce because it fosters a culture of overwork and underappreciation.

Yelick claims that students must work for four months in child welfare services in exchange for $5,000 per semester. According to her, the more time students have to work in the field the more money they take out.
