In recent times, the media has been highlighting a worrying crime trend called “jugging”. My attention was first drawn to it when an overwhelming number of cases were reported in Maryland during the months of June and July. As I delved deeper into this topic, I stumbled upon numerous cases across the United States. While there haven’t been any reported cases of jugging in Southern Indiana, the FBI has issued a reminder that it’s crucial to stay alert and cautious. It’s worth noting that trends like this can spread rapidly, making it all the more important to be vigilant.

In essence, “jugging” refers to a form of armed robbery that targets a particular category of victims. According to the FBI, this criminal activity involves the following.

FBI Tips for Protecting Yourself

The city of Evansville may not have experienced any incidents of “jugging” yet, but it is always wise to refresh our minds with safety measures to prevent becoming a victim. The FBI offers some useful advice to help keep us safe, such as:

    • Be Aware of Your Surroundings: When withdrawing or depositing money, always be mindful of who and what is around you. If something feels off, trust your instincts.
    • Conceal Your Cash: Don’t make it obvious that you’re carrying money. Secure it discreetly in a bag or pocket.
    • Vary Your Routine: Change up the times and locations you visit the bank. Routine makes it easier for criminals to predict your actions.
    • Drive Straight to Your Next Destination: If you feel like you’re being followed, head to a police station or a crowded area and call for help.
    • Avoid Distractions: Stay off your phone and stay alert until you are safely inside your car or another secure location.

In case you observe anything out of the ordinary or experience any unsafe situation, it is crucial to report it immediately. You have the option to get in touch with the local law enforcement or share tips anonymously with the FBI. Always keep in mind that being informed and vigilant is the most effective approach to safeguard yourself and your family.
