In Michigan City, a man who was previously convicted of a federal drug-related offense was taken into custody after a police officer approached his car to find it enveloped in a thick cloud of marijuana smoke.
East Chicago resident Leonel Portes is facing a Level 5 felony charge of cocaine possession.
La Porte County Police reported that a man was pulled over by an officer who was monitoring traffic on Friday night. The officer noticed that the man’s vehicle did not have a functioning license plate light while driving southbound on Franklin St.
As Portes lowered his driver’s side window, the officer noticed thick clouds of marijuana smoke emanating from the passenger compartment of the vehicle, which seemed to overwhelm him.
The man faces charges for having a plastic bag containing 2.1 grams of cocaine.
Currently, there haven’t been any accusations made about the discovery of three individual plastic bags containing approximately one ounce of marijuana inside the car.
Police discovered that Portes had a previous federal conviction related to cocaine sales, as per a computer check.
The latest charge against him carries a potential sentence of one to six years.
