In La Porte, IN, a driver’s traffic stop led to the discovery and seizure of cocaine, resulting in the driver receiving a prison sentence. Ramon Castro was sentenced to four years in prison and two years of probation for cocaine possession by La Porte Circuit Court Judge Tom Alevizos on Friday.
In August of last year, a 39-year-old man from Michigan City was pulled over for speeding at Monroe and Clayton streets, as per court documents. Upon searching his vehicle, the police discovered a ziplock bag with over 20 grams of cocaine inside. Castro reacted by grabbing the bag and tightly holding it in his fist, according to the police.
According to court documents, after being ordered to drop the bag, Castro expressed his reluctance to go to jail and claimed that he didn’t mean to do anything wrong. Before obediently following the police’s instructions to lie on the ground, he proceeded to throw the bag onto the hood of his car.
By accepting a plea deal, the defendant was able to have a more serious charge of cocaine dealing dropped.
Upon searching his vehicle, authorities discovered several empty plastic sandwich bags commonly used for drug distribution, as well as a scale with traces of cocaine on it. The vehicle in question was a luxurious 2015 Nissan GT-R.
