La Porte County Sheriff’s deputies went above and beyond their call of duty over the weekend by patrolling the Michigan City boat races. During their patrol, one of the deputies was in the right place at the right time and successfully intercepted an alleged drunk driver who was recklessly driving through a pedestrian area.
In the wee hours of Friday night, an officer was on patrol in the packed parking lot of Washington Park, where racing boats and vendors’ booths were set up. Out of nowhere, a 2012 Honda Pilot made an appearance within the fenced-off area, dragging along metal posts with concrete bases and green snow fencing.
When the driver came to a stop, he was unable to open his door as the fencing had wrapped around his vehicle. Upon inspection, officers discovered three cans of beer in the center console of the Honda. One can was empty, another was half-full, and the third had not been opened.
Police arrested Bibiano Rosas Quino, a 51-year-old Michigan City resident, for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. During the incident, Quino’s wife, who did not have a valid driver’s license, was present as a passenger. She was permitted to contact a ride and the Hoxcnda was relocated to an appropriate parking area by the officers.
