FBI Cautions Indiana Residents About Emerging 'Jugging' Crime Trend
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

“Jugging” is a disturbing crime trend that has caught the attention of many recently. I came across this term when I read about numerous cases reported in Maryland during June and July. As I dug deeper, I discovered that this isn’t an isolated issue and similar incidents are being reported across the nation. While there haven’t been any incidents of jugging in Southern Indiana to my knowledge, the FBI is urging everyone to stay alert and cautious since such trends can easily spread. It’s essential to remain vigilant and informed about any potential dangers in our surroundings.

What is Jugging?

  • 1 What is Jugging?
  • 2 Tips for Protecting Yourself

In essence, the criminal act of “jugging” involves using weapons to commit robbery, but it targets a particular group of victims. According to the FBI, this is how they define it.

Tips for Protecting Yourself

The folks in Evansville may not have experienced any incidents of “jugging,” but it’s always a good idea to refresh our memories on how to stay safe and avoid becoming a target. The FBI has some helpful tips that you should consider:

  • Be aware of your surroundings and any suspicious individuals or vehicles.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash or displaying expensive jewelry in public.
  • If you must make a deposit or withdrawal at a bank, use the drive-thru or ATM rather than walking inside.
  • When leaving a bank or ATM, check your surroundings and make sure you’re not being followed.
  • If you suspect someone is following you, drive to a police station or other safe location.
  • Consider using a money pouch or money belt to conceal cash and other valuables while in public.
    • Be Aware of Your Surroundings: When withdrawing or depositing money, always be mindful of who and what is around you. If something feels off, trust your instincts.
    • Conceal Your Cash: Don’t make it obvious that you’re carrying money. Secure it discreetly in a bag or pocket.
    • Vary Your Routine: Change up the times and locations you visit the bank. Routine makes it easier for criminals to predict your actions.
    • Drive Straight to Your Next Destination: If you feel like you’re being followed, head to a police station or a crowded area and call for help.
    • Avoid Distractions: Stay off your phone and stay alert until you are safely inside your car or another secure location.

If you come across anything out of the ordinary or experience any sense of danger, it is crucial to report it right away. You have option to reach out to local law enforcement, or you can submit anonymous tips to the FBI. Always keep in mind that staying cautious and informed is the most effective approach to safeguarding yourself and your loved ones.
