During an investigation, an undercover officer found himself in a dangerous situation when three armed men approached his vehicle.
According to a social media post by the department, on August 14, while detectives were conducting an investigation near West 52nd Street and North High School Road, an IMPD Violent Crimes Task Force detective in an unmarked car was approached by a small red Kia.
In court documents, it was revealed that three masked and gloved men approached the detective’s car with their guns drawn and pointed towards him.
As the detective noticed one of the men approaching, he immediately discerned the sound of a round being chambered in a gun. Reacting swiftly, he accelerated in his car and simultaneously contacted additional officers for backup.
After detectives tracked the suspects’ car, they decided to abandon it and flee on foot. In a desperate attempt to evade capture, they tossed their firearms into a nearby trash can before disappearing into a densely wooded area. Eventually, law enforcement managed to apprehend two out of the three suspects, a 22-year-old man and a 24-year-old man.

The Beretta pistol, one of the guns found, had been reported stolen from Shelbyville in 2021.
The 22-year-old is currently facing preliminary charges of attempted robbery, theft, and intimidation. Meanwhile, the 24-year-old is also facing preliminary charges of attempted robbery, unlawful carry of a handgun, and intimidation.
The department stated that the third suspect is still on the run.
During the search of the car, detectives discovered the masks and gloves used during the attempted carjacking, as well as two guns that were discarded in the trash can.
