The  Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) has made an exciting announcement regarding their annual sturgeon survey. During the survey, the agency achieved a remarkable feat by recording a record catch.

Fisheries staff were actively engaged in capturing, collecting data about, tagging, and releasing the fish in Lake St. Clair.

During their research, they made a remarkable discovery – a massive lake sturgeon, as mentioned in a post shared by MDNR on Facebook.

The crew successfully caught a massive fish weighing 125 pounds and measuring over six feet in length.

According to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, Lake St. Clair, also known as the “Heart of the Great Lakes,” has a surface area of just 430 square miles and an average depth of 11 feet.

During their annual sturgeon survey, the staff of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources made an exciting discovery – they successfully reeled in their largest lake sturgeon to date.

The MDNR shared a photograph of the massive catch, proudly stating, “This is the largest fish ever caught in the history of our survey, measured by length.”

According to the post, it wouldn’t be surprising to discover that some of these fish are reaching 80 years old, despite the challenges that come with aging.

“Our biologists and technicians gather valuable information about the status of lake sturgeon through these activities. Tracking abundance, survival, movement, and habitat use are just a few of the crucial aspects that we monitor,” stated the MDNR on their Facebook page.

“Efforts like this are instrumental in maintaining the thriving population of sturgeon, an extraordinary and distinct species,” stated the MDNR. They further emphasized the significance of such conservation practices in ensuring the well-being of these magnificent creatures.

“My dad is celebrating his 80th birthday this week, and it’s incredible to think that fish has been swimming around since the 1940s! Can you imagine what that fish must be thinking? ‘Wow, I’ve managed to escape being caught for 80 whole years,'” one woman exclaimed.

A concerned individual inquired, “Was he released? I certainly hope so.”
