A 24-year-old man has been convicted of second-degree murder and felony firearm charges by a Michigan jury in Pontiac.
After three days of trial and a day and a half of deliberations, Malcolm Otis Draper Jr. has been convicted, as revealed by Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald on Tuesday.
On December 2, 2023, a shooting incident took place in Auburn Hills that led to charges against the accused. The victim, a 47-year-old artist and resident of Auburn Hills, was working on some painting for Draper at that time.
According to McDonald, the killing was a pointless act of violence that stemmed from a minor disagreement. While acknowledging that the verdict cannot undo the loss of the victim’s life, McDonald expressed his hope that it will provide some measure of comfort to the victim’s family and those who cared about him.
Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Michael Warren has scheduled the sentencing for 2 p.m. on September 4, and Draper will continue to be held at the Oakland County Jail until then.
Rob Novy, the Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, was the leader of the trial team in the case.
