A shooting outside his restaurant at 26th and MLK claimed the life of a local businessman in Indianapolis.
The investigation suggests that the tragic shooting at Pa and Ma’s Backyard BBQ originated from a disagreement concerning finances.
The shooting occurred at approximately 9 p.m. on Wednesday.
Brockelle Nelson, the daughter of the victim, expressed her deep sorrow and heartache over the loss of her father. She shared, “I’m gonna miss him. My heart hurts. I’m never gonna be the same.”
George Nelson Sr., fondly known as Big George, is fondly remembered as a compassionate individual who consistently lent a helping hand to those in need. At 56 years old, he exemplified the spirit of kindness and generosity.
Brockelle Nelson reflected on the positive impact that he had on the community, particularly in terms of his dedication to hiring local individuals and supporting the youth.
Within a mere three hours of the shooting incident, law enforcement swiftly apprehended the alleged perpetrator, Justin Jones, who is 38 years old. The authorities managed to locate Jones after responding to a report of shots being fired on the east side. Consequently, Jones has been arrested in connection with the homicide.
According to court documents released on Friday in Marion County, officials were able to identify a suspect vehicle through the department’s Real Time Crime Center.
IMPD released a statement stating that they were able to gather suspect information and a description of the suspect vehicle through the collaborative efforts of district officers, homicide detectives, and the community.
According to IMPD, officers from the east district were sent to the 2000 block of N Bancroft St after receiving a report of shots being fired. Upon arrival, they found the vehicle that was involved in the earlier homicide on Dr. MLK Jr St, along with three individuals inside. The officers detained the three adult males and obtained a search warrant. The search of the vehicle led to the discovery of two firearms.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), they believe that Nelson has hired Jones to complete some tasks for the business.
The work was not completed, which resulted in a disagreement over payment.
Brockelle Nelson explained that the agreement was for the payment to be split in half, with the first half given upfront and the second half to be paid upon completion. However, the other person involved insisted on receiving the full amount upfront.
Rev. Charles Harrison expressed his disbelief at the idea of resorting to violence over a monetary dispute. He found it absurd and incomprehensible that someone would go to such extreme measures.
Nelson, who has managed Pa and Ma’s Backyard BBQ for several years, recently launched a new branch on MLK.
Harrison, whose church is a mere few blocks away, expressed his sentiments regarding the ongoing struggle to attract new businesses to the area due to the persistently high crime rate. He conveyed his deep sadness over the tragic and senseless loss of life.
According to Harrison, he emphasized his dedication to revitalizing the business and bringing it to the community, as he was recognized for his efforts in assisting the residents.
Brockelle Nelson expressed her deep concern over the impact of the suspect’s actions on the community, stating, “It’s not just my father. This suspect hurt an entire community.” She emphasized the importance of engaging in conversations and resolving disagreements without resorting to violence, stating, “Have a conversation. Disagree, but you ain’t got to kill somebody. It’s never that deep.”
The suspect remains in custody without bail until formal charges are filed.
