In June, Tiffany Waller’s fiancé, Matthew Steele, was shot in the stomach when he confronted a man who was harassing them in the Walmart parking lot in Camby.
As Tiffany Waller looks through pictures of herself and her fiancé Matthew Steele, she can’t help but feel emotional when she sees his mesmerizing hazel eyes.
“It has been an absolute nightmare. I’ve lost my home and I am currently looking after his daughter while they both struggle with their own challenges. The whole experience has been incredibly distressing,” Waller expressed.
Waller stated that Steele had been shot in the stomach when he confronted a 19-year-old man who was harassing them in the Walmart parking lot. The incident took place at the Walmart located off West Mooresville Road and State Road 67 in Camby at approximately 1:45 p.m. on June 2.
According to Waller, the altercation between the two individuals began with a heated exchange of words, escalating to the point where Steele delivered a forceful punch to the man’s face.
In that moment, Waller recounts how the 19-year-old suddenly grabbed a gun from his lap and fired at her fiancé.
“I believe that it is unacceptable to cause harm to someone by delivering a single blow that could potentially result in their death,” expressed Waller.
However, the Hendricks County prosecutor presented evidence that contradicted this statement.
On Wednesday, the sheriff’s office released a statement confirming that the prosecutor has decided not to pursue criminal charges against the 19-year-old.
Chase Houle from 13News attempted to contact county prosecutor Loren Delp to inquire about the evidence that led to his conclusion. However, no response was received.
According to the sole practitioner of Daniel Vaughn Law in Indiana, individuals are permitted to use a reasonable level of force, including deadly force, if they believe it is necessary to prevent a forcible felony or serious bodily harm to themselves or another person.
According to Waller, she is not against guns in any way, but she firmly believes that individuals should be at least 21 years old before they are allowed to purchase a firearm.
According to Waller, if the altercation involved two grown adults, the outcome would have been different. He believes that they would have engaged in a physical fight rather than resorting to shooting.
Houle also reached out to the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office and they declined to comment on the prosecutor’s decision not to press charges.
The sheriff’s office is still awaiting the final report regarding the investigation.
Camby, located in the southwest section of Indianapolis, is a vibrant neighborhood.
