A recent outbreak of listeria caused by deli meat has spread from the Midwest to the East Coast, resulting in dozens of people falling ill and two fatalities.
At present, the CDC is examining the root cause of the latest listeria outbreak, and they have linked it to deli-sliced meat.
Many people in this outbreak are reporting eating meats that they had sliced at deli counters. Investigators are collecting information to determine the specific products that may be contaminated. Products sold at the deli, especially those sliced or prepared at the deli, can be contaminated with Listeria.
According to the CDC, it is not possible to eliminate listeria by refrigeration. However, reheating the meat can kill the bacteria. As of Friday, July 19th, 2024, the listeria outbreak has resulted in the hospitalization of at least 28 individuals and the deaths of 2 people. The CDC is expected to release updated statistics later today. Currently, the outbreak has been reported in Midwest states, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Missouri. There is a concern that Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio may also see cases, as reports have already emerged as far east as New York and Massachusetts.
According to reports, you may have experienced symptoms of listeria without even realizing it. Keep an eye out for the following warning signs:
Listeria infections typically cause fever, muscle aches, and tiredness and may cause stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Symptoms can occur quickly or to up to 10 weeks after eating contaminated food.
The CDC is currently unaware if the outbreak is associated with any particular products. However, rest assured that we will keep you informed as soon as we have more information on the matter.
