At around 5:45 p.m. on Friday, a police chase resulted in a crash at U.S. 40 and Smith Road.

A tragic incident occurred in Plainfield, Indiana, where two individuals lost their lives as a result of a police officer crashing into their vehicle during a pursuit on Friday evening.

According to a spokesperson from the Plainfield police, officers were called to a Long John Silver’s restaurant in Plainfield around 5:45 p.m. on August 30th, following a report of a person down. While investigating the incident, an officer was said to have been involved in an altercation with an individual at the restaurant.

After the incident, the suspect quickly hopped into a white Kia and made a swift getaway, according to the police. In response, the officer gave chase, leading to a short pursuit along U.S. 40.

As the officer pursued the suspect vehicle through the intersection at Smith Road, their cruiser unfortunately collided with a gray Ford that was already in the intersection.

Tragically, the crash claimed the lives of both individuals inside the Ford. The victims have been identified as Barbara Williams, 78, and Bennie Williams, 79, according to the coroner’s report on Saturday.

The officer was transported to the hospital in a stable condition, according to the police. They further mentioned that the officer was discharged from the hospital on Friday evening with minor injuries.

The suspect, who was driving the Kia, fled the scene. Although the vehicle was later discovered, it was empty. Currently, the police are actively searching for the suspect, but no description of the individual is available yet.

The Avon police are currently conducting an investigation into the crash, in accordance with the policy of the Plainfield Police Department. Furthermore, the officer who was involved in the crash has been placed on administrative leave and is receiving the necessary support, as stated by the police.

Police are currently investigating an ongoing incident, causing the closure of U.S. 40, also known as East Main Street in Plainfield, at Smith Road.
