The Michigan City Police Department announced on Friday that they have received a $180,000 grant from the federal Community Funding Project (CFP). This funding will be used to acquire and install advanced crime-fighting equipment and technology.
The MCPD will utilize the funding to improve its integrated system of Flock Safety Falcon Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPRs) and Flock Safety Raven audio detection devices.
U.S. Representative Frank Mrvan submitted an application for CFP funding on behalf of the MCPD. The application and approval process for the funding took almost a year.
“There is a significant amount of economic development happening in Michigan City, and this grant will play a vital role in supporting that growth. It will provide law enforcement with the necessary equipment to enhance community protection,” stated Mrvan during Friday’s press conference. He further emphasized the commitment of himself and his fellow colleagues in Congress to ensure that Michigan City receives the essential resources it requires. Moving forward, he highlighted the importance of collaboration between federal, state, and local entities in their ongoing mission to continually enhance the well-being of Michigan City.”
According to Police Chief Marty Corley, Flock Safety Falcon ALPRs and Flock Safety Raven audio detection devices have greatly enhanced the efficiency of Michigan City law enforcement officers in responding to and handling crimes. These devices have worked together to enable officers to promptly respond to gunshots and swiftly locate stolen vehicles within minutes.
Corley expressed his enthusiasm for the technology, describing it as a valuable tool in enhancing their policing efforts. He emphasized that it allows them to effectively patrol various areas within the community, ensuring safety even in the absence of an officer on site. The grant they received to implement additional Flock Safety Falcon ALPRs will enable them to expand their coverage and further enhance their ability to keep the community safe.
“This press conference provided us with a wonderful chance to unite and demonstrate our commitment to enhancing Michigan City as a desirable destination and a thriving community. We are excited about the prospect of further engaging with the community, fostering stronger connections with the residents of Michigan City, and ultimately, delivering more successful results in our daily endeavors.”
Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch expressed her gratitude for the CFP award, emphasizing its significance in enhancing the safety of Michigan City and its residents.
“Our top priority is the health and safety of the public,” she emphasized. “This commitment extends not only to our residents but also to the visitors who come to our city. We are dedicated to showcasing our community as a safe and secure destination.”
“We are determined to send a strong message to criminals that their actions will not be tolerated in our community. We will utilize all available resources to ensure that they are held accountable for their crimes. Thanks to the Falcon and Raven system supported by this grant, our ‘shots fired’ statistics have already decreased by 33 percent. This technology has played a crucial role in further reducing those numbers.”
